#ww Wedding Wednesday – @PhotoMingle, now in Atlanta!!!

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

Wedding Wednesday is here again and this week I am featuring something fabulous that is NEW in the Atlanta area.  If you have been to any weddings, mitzvahs, trade shows, etc., in the Florida area, you may have already seen this – for those of us in Georgia, get ready for PhotoMingle!

I have to say that I feel a little like I am ‘letting you in on a secret’ but because PhotoMingle is so incredibly cool, I know they won’t be a secret for long and you can say you saw it here first!!!  Their slogan is “It’s a party, let’s mingle!” And mingle you will with this interactive photo and video screen that is like nothing you have ever seen before.  Just press the “Take a Photo” button, smile, and say “cheese” – and PhotoMingle does the rest! Once you take your images, you’ll be able to write your own personal messages on them… all with the power of your fingertips.  You can then scan through them to make a scrapbook of your event, upload them directly to facebook and more.  Your guests can also record short video messages to you that you will be able to keep forever.

PhotoMingle was designed for weddings, bringing the best features of a guest book and photo booth together in one.  Now when I got married 12+ years ago, we had the disposable cameras on the tables and the images I got from those are some of my all-time favorites because people took them of each other.  PhotoMingle is just like this but high-tech! PhotoMingle has been at every kind of wedding you can imagine, and everyone loves it! From young to old, kids to grandparents, the PhotoMingle is simple to learn and use. In fact, because it looks like a large television screen, guests are often attracted to it from across a reception hall. Within seconds, users are taking their own photos and personalizing them.

I don’t know about you but I love this concept! Guest book, disposable cameras and memories to last a lifetime all rolled into one – who wouldn’t want one?!?  If you would like to find out more about PhotoMingle, you can get to their website by clicking here. They also have a facebook page or you can follow them on Twitter @photomingle.  I hope you will check them out for your wedding or special event, and as usual, please tell them that Dreamweaver Calligraphy referred you!

“Expensive flower holiday” meet “Ways to save on wedding flowers”

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

My husband and I got married 12 years ago this weekend and it was the Saturday before Mother’s day.  We picked that day to honor our mothers and grandmothers before we realized that, next to Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day is the most expensive flower weekend of the year.  Oops….so we had to come up with ideas on ways to save on flowers.  Here are some we used as well as a couple other ones that might come in handy.

Fortunately for me, my two favorite flowers are daisies and yellow roses which are both in season in the late spring and early summer.  It is always most cost efficient to buy flowers that are in season.  If you pick a bloom that has to imported from somewhere else in the world, you are going to pay a pretty penny for it.  There are guides that will tell you which flowers are in season at certain times of the year.  If you click here, you will find one of these very helpful lists!

Another thing to do, depending on where you live and what your choices are is to shop around.  Different florists charge different amounts. I found that out this weekend when pricing flowers for my mother and mother-in-law online.  I realize they are in different parts of the country but the florists in Metairie, Louisiana were WAY more expensive than the ones in Geneva, New York! (Actually, they were even more expensive than FTD, but that’s a different story altogether!!!)

There are many different variations of the same type of flowers and a lot of the time they vary in price a lot so it is important to keep all of your options open when going for a particular look.  Calla Lilies run around $7 a stem, while similarly-shaped Tulips are less than $3. Cymbidium Orchids can run as high as $60 a stem while Dendrobium Orchids are less than $4. Other less expensive options include Orange Blossoms, Lavender, Daffodil, Daisies, Chrysanthemum, Carnations and Ivy.

One thing I found out when planning my wedding was to NOT have green bridesmaids dresses.  Why, you might be wondering…well, if the dresses are green you need a lot of color in the bouquets they carry.  When I changed my dress color from green to purple, it cut the cost of my flowers because more greenery could be used as an accent in the bouquets.  Sometimes, its the little things….

Now I mentioned that Valentines Day and Mothers Day are expensive flower holidays.  There are some holidays that your venue, church, etc., are already going to be decorated, such as Christmas and Easter so you won’t need as many of your own flowers to decorate with.

One other way you can save on flower is to see if there is another bride who may have the church booked the same day as you.  If so, the two of you could possibly coordinate flowers together and then split the cost of the bill.

Another way we cut costs on our wedding flowers was by decorating with candle holders that had either just a few flowers or ribbon as adornments.  They are less expensive and add a beautiful, romantic glow to your special day.  I have heard of brides carrying hurricane lamps that had flowers around the bases in lieu of traditional bouquets.  Once they got to the reception, the lamps were used as part of the decorations on the head table.  That way they didn’t have to worry about what they were going to do with them after the ceremony and the candles themselves served double duty!

There was one small way we did “splurge” a little on flowers on our Mothers Day weekend wedding however – we ordered yellow carnations and tied them with a ribbon and card that said “Happy Mothers Day from Maren and Michael” and handed them to all the moms as they went through the receiving line at the church.  They were all tickled and surprised and I highly recommend it if you have a Mothers Day weekend wedding also!

I hope that these suggestions come in handy when having to maneuver around expensive flower holidays or just when trying to keep wedding costs down.  If you have any other suggestions to add, please feel free to comment!

#ww Wedding Wednesday is all about a Deal, Donation and a Discount!!!!

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

Reggie Bush (my son's favorite football player) representing the Muscular Dystophy Association)

It’s the day of the week again , hashtag #ww in honor of Wedding Wednesday. I know I normally cover “regular” wedding vendors on this day, telling you about them, what they do, what they offer, etc.  There have been some #ww Wedding Wednesdays when I pick my vendors according to a theme.  TODAY is one of those days…..

Now I realize when you hear the term MDA or Muscular Dystrophy Association, weddings are not the first thing to come to your mind.  Before I agreed to be a part of this ‘undertaking’ (that I am getting ready to tell you about), I always thought first of Jerry Lewis. Watching the MDA telethon over Labor Day weekend was something I would do for hours on end and enjoyed every moment of it.  The thing is, Jerry Lewis is gone and the MDA still needs our help.

You may be asking yourself “What does MDA actually do?!?”  Borrowed from their donation website is this….MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.

MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and support services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. With national headquarters in Tucson, MDA has more than 200 offices across the country, sponsors some 200 hospital-affiliated clinics and supports more than 330 research projects around the world.

MDA supports more research on neuromuscular diseases than any other private-sector organization in the world. MDA scientists are in the forefront of gene therapy research and have uncovered the genetic defects responsible for several forms of muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease), childhood spinal muscular atrophy and several other neuromuscular conditions.

The Association’s comprehensive services program includes diagnostic and follow-up medical consultations, flu shots, support groups, MDA summer camps for youngsters, a medical equipment program, assistance with equipment repairs and resource referral.

Through its national advocacy program, MDA works to make life better for people with muscular dystrophy and related muscle diseases by providing representation in matters of public policy and research advancement, nationally and internationally; and facilitating active involvement in these areas by the people it serves.

MDA was created in 1950 by a group of adults with muscular dystrophy, parents of children with muscular dystrophy and a physician-scientist studying the disorder.

OK, so now what does MDA have in common with #ww Wedding Wednesday?  It is this – Dreamweaver Calligraphy has agreed to be “locked up for MDA” on May 9th which, coincidentally, is a Wednesday.  Because of this, we are offering an unprecedented one day only special – do you or someone you know require calligraphy services of some sort, either now or in the future?  If you make a donation on my behalf using this link http://www2.mda.org/site/TR?px=1189923&fr_id=2347&pg=personal, I will give you DOUBLE the amount of your donation in a discount on your calligraphy services!!! That’s right! You get a tax-deductible donation to a worthy organization AND an amazing discount at the same time! Let’s put this into perspective – you donate $50 to MDA and you get a $100 discount on your calligraphy services! That’s like getting 50 outer envelopes addressed for FREE!!!! You cannot beat such an amazing offer but it is for one day only! So click on this link http://www2.mda.org/site/TR?px=1189923&fr_id=2347&pg=personal, make your donation to my personal page and you will get a discount that doubles whatever you choose to donate.  It can be as little as $5 – even a $10 discount is still a discount, am I right?!? I sincerely hope that you take me up on this offer or at least share it with someone who is already going to hire a calligrapher anyhow – it would be a shame for them to miss the opportunity to not only help others but also get a tax write off AND a great discount at the same time!

I know at the end of every blog I ask you to tell your vendor you found me on the Dreamweaver Calligraphy blog…this time you don’t have to.  I will know by your generous donation! Thank you in advance for being willing to support such a great organization!

“May the Fourth Be With You” – Star Wars themed weddings!

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

“May the fourth be with you” – yes, that is today, the 4th day of May.  Now, before I had children that went to elementary school, I might have never thought about May 4th being the 4th of May but every year now I start to hear it and it gets more “recognized” with each passing year.  That got me to thinking…Star Wars themed weddings?!? Surely, someone must have had a Star Wars themed wedding before and sure enough, they have! The stuff I found was amazing! Honestly, there were too many images to share.  The best stuff I found was on a website called http://www.galacticbinder.com/.  If there was anything out there that was Star Wars themed, they have it, know about it or can tell you where to get it.  And when you google the term “Star Wars wedding” they had a list of the top 10 components of a Star Wars themed wedding that I am going to share with you now.  (for the record, I did email them to tell them I would be referencing their information in my blog but I never heard back from them.  I hope they know that I am just trying to “share the force” with as many people as possible – those who know me know that I am all about a good theme party and a Star Wars themed wedding is the ULTIMATE!!!)

#10 Consider your location.  Real Star Wars fans do not get married in a church or a country club.  Way too uptight for their tastes.  What they suggest – get married at your comic book store.  I personally think if you had the right venue that you could carry out Star Wars themed decorations and get married in a park or a venue that was willing to cater to your specific requests.

#9 Who will be your officiant? Not a regular priest or a rabbi – someone  dressed in a costume, of course.  Although their website shows a slave Princess Leia, given my research into different types officiants, you should be able to find one that would dress in the outfit that meets your needs.

#8 deals with the wedding dress.  They fancy the one that looks like Padma’s wedding gown.  Honestly I think you could go, again, Princess Leia or any other number of costumes if you choose for this.

#7 – Key to pulling off your theme for your Star Wars themed wedding is how the wedding party dresses.  This is where you will really cement the theme to your special day

#6 Reception entrance is key.  It is cool when the military has the couple walk under crossed swords into their reception.  For a Star Wars themed wedding, the ONLY choice is light sabers!

#5 – the music.  Any type of Star Wars themed music is appropriate for your first day.  There is so much to choose from and if you are true fans, you will know what is best for you.

#4 is the cake toppers.  They make actual replicas of Hans and Leia cake toppers or you could have something that is customized just for you  and your special day.  Again, this is another key element that will tie in the theme of your day so it has to be special!

#3 deals with the cake.  They had some pictures on their site but again, I have talked about cake.  Cake designers these day make more than your traditional layer cake.  You need one that will be special to you.  It might be the Death Star.  Maybe it is R2D2.  Whatever it is, it has to be fabulous!

#2 deals with the Honeymoon.  I am pretty sure that you aren’t going to a ‘galaxy far far away’ or Alderon, but have some photos taken or you in at least some of your wedding-themed attire to carry on the spirit of your Star Wars themed wedding.

#1 thing to keep in mind is your guest list.  The bride and groom, of course, are into the theme.  Get your family and friends involved; have them dress up and be part of the celebration.  It surely will be on of the most unique weddings they have ever attended so they are going to want to be a part of it.  And then, take lots of pictures – these are memories you want to preserve forever!

May the FORCE be with you! (now plan a Star Wars themed wedding – next year it falls on a Saturday!!!!)

Ma

r family and friends to get into the spirit. And then top it off by taking lots of pictures of them (it is your wedding after all) to preserve the memories forever!

#ww Wedding Wednesday – time for Atlanta’s Best DJ Neal Howard!

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

Its that time – or that DAY – of the week again, Wedding Wednesday.  I never did get to actually “tweet” anyone online today since I am under a deadline working on some gorgeous pink and grey embossed wedding invitations (look for pics of them in my upcoming “color on your wedding invitations” blog I will be posting soon!!!).  But I could not let the day get away without posting my Wedding Wednesday blog.  We have talked wedding planning websites, cakes, planners, venues and more but we have not covered one of the most important aspects of your wedding day, the entertainment.  Of course if you want entertainment, you want the BEST so tonight I present Neal Howard of Atlanta’s Best DJ!

Neal is  Georgia’s only certified Wedding Entertainment Director (http://www.wedguild.com/) which means he has completed a rigorous application process to prove his abilities beyond showing up at a wedding and pressing play on the CD player. He had to submit referrals from clients and other experience wedding professionals and then endure a very difficult interview process.

He has hosted and participated in the MarBecca Method Love Story and Master of Ceremonies workshops multiple times in Atlanta http://markferrell.com/products-page/marbecca-method-workshops/ These workshops teach entertainers how to properly write and tell a couple’s story, and how to properly represent them at their wedding. The workshops are very hard and stretch the attendees emotionally and creatively.

He has hosted and participated in The Professional Process Workshop http://www.theprofessionalprocess.com/ Again, another workshop designed to hone skills and improve the end result that clients receive when hiring him.

Neal’s goal for a wedding is to help his clients have an event that leaves them saying WOW! But not wow at him, just wow at what an incredible event they’ve just experienced. There are 17 special moments that may happen at a wedding celebration. Each of those is an opportunity to create a unique memory. For instance, while he could ask for the names of the wedding party and introduce them based on that, the clients that hire him are looking for something more. Something truly unique. So he finds out more about who is in the wedding party, and why they were chosen to be in the wedding party. Doing this allows him to personalize the grand entrances and it makes the audience feel more connected. By applying that concept (finding out more) to all parts of the reception, he is able to create something beyond what many of his clients ever expected.

Neal feels that the worst thing in the world is to go to a wedding where you feel like a spectator. He tries to make everyone feel like they are part of this special day. By being one of the only DJ “teams” around, with the help of his business partner, Don, he is able to provide an experience that they believe is unmatched in Georgia.

Brides and grooms that want their wedding day memories to be FUN are the ones that Atlanta’s Best DJ’s work with the best. Our motto – More Fun! Guaranteed!!  If you, too, want more fun at your special celebration, I encourage you to check out Neal Howard on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/atlantasbestdj or on the website http://www.atlantasbestdj.com/.  And of course, if you do call Neal, be sure to tell him that you read about him on the Dreamweaver Calligraphy blog!

In honor of the #nfldraft, I present ‘A Football-themed Wedding’!

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

Anyone who knows me knows I am a huge football fan, and although I cheer for other teams, my absolute favorite team is the Buffalo Bills.  One of my favorite times of year is the NFL draft.  I know its a little weird, especially for a girl, but its like a little “football preview” between the Super Bowl and waiting for preseason to start.  Since the draft started last night and is going on through Saturday, I woke up this morning thinking about football-themed weddings.  After doing a little research, I was amazed by all the stuff I found!!!

The picture at the top is from a football wedding held at the Detroit Lions stadium.  The groom was a Lions fan and the bride, of all things, a Bills fan! You will notice the bridesmaids dresses and flowers are all Buffalo Bills colors.  Their wedding was one of the first that I came across when I googled the term “football themed weddings”.  It took me right to a website dedicated to nothing but sports themed weddings!

The website www.sportsthemedweddings.com is the place to start if you are planning a football wedding.  They had the coolest save-the-dates, invitations, programs and more all with actual team logos to tie your theme together.  The one thing I really liked in particular were the wedding programs; they take photos of all the bridesmaids and groomsmen in jerseys  and make “roster cards” for all of them like they are part of the “team”.  I was overwhelmed by all the ultra cool stuff they had on their website.

They did have great ideas for incorporating a football theme throughout your wedding day.  These are some ideas I borrowed from their website…

  • Football Themed Ceremony Locations: A local football field may have the option to request a wedding service. You should also check into public school football fields as possible options.  Pro and college stadiums also allow access to the field for private events or private tours, these can be options for your wedding ceremony as well.
  • Unique Guestbook Ideas: Guests can sign a customized football jersey, regulation-sized NFL Football, or a combination of the two that you can frame as keepsakes from your wedding day.
  • Astro Turf Aisle Runner:  Something to think about, certainly not for everyone, but imagine pulling out an astroturf aisle runner with all the yard markers painted in white.  That’s classy!
  • One way to guarantee a truly memorable wedding experience would be taking your wedding photos at your local football field, NFL or college stadium. Be sure to add in related items such as team football helmets, penalty flags, and the football itself.  Ask for access to the locker room and main concourse for additional photo opportunities.  Sometimes a photo can be accented by some unique accessories.  For example, have the Groomsmen wear team socks and pull up their pantlegs for one photo or team logo undershirts that are revealed in a photo by bridesmaids ripping open their shirts standing behind them.
  • Be sure to add tailgating food as appetizers during the reception that reflects the kinds and types of food served during football games such as nachos, game-day themed burgers, touchdown themed hot dogs and bratwursts, etc.
  • Custom printed rally towels can make for an interesting wedding reception entrance as a sports announcer introduces the wedding party.

Turf aisle runners, terrible towels and a reception with chicken wings?!? I don’t want to get married again but that sure does sound like my kind of celebration!!! (maybe if we ever renew our vows…..hahaha!)

To really tie your theme into your wedding, you could hire “The Wedding Guy”.  I found him on Wedding Wire.  He does weddings throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.  He is a full-time Professional Interfaith Wedding Minister, Officiant, and Celebrant. (Interfaith means he can serve couples with or without the same Religious backgrounds, and create for you a ceremony that honors your Spiritual paths.)  And he LOVES theme weddings, so if you want a jersey-wearing minister to perform your ceremony, he’s your guy!

When it comes to cakes, the ideas are endless.  Cake decorators can do everything from football stadiums to helmets and everything in between.  But if you really want to drive your football-themed cake home, having a cake topper designed in your likeness with your team colors is it! These things are amazing, plus you have a wonderful and personal keepsake for years to come.  The company that makes these toppers is called www.FunDeliver.com.

For me, I really was too busy working my other Mardi Gras theme aspect of my wedding, but if I had wanted to insert just a little bit of Buffalo Bills into my celebration, the garter set above would have been the way I would go.  I hope that this information is helpful to any of you that might want to plan a football-themed extravaganza of a wedding.  Of course, if you contact any of these vendors, please mention that you saw them on Dreamweaver Calligraphy.

Happy draft weekend and let’s go Bills!!!

#ww Wedding Wednesday – its time for Wedding Bows by Natalie Kelley!

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

Its that day of the week again, Wedding Wednesday!!! There is a lot of stuff going on in the spring, including my Earth Day Birthday! Until the NFL changed the way they did things, the one thing that always happened over the weekend of my birthday was the NFL draft.  It was like a little present to me, being a big football fan and all!!! But they finally smartened up and started showing the draft in prime time (as it probably should have been done before but wasn’t).  The very first time the draft was on TV on prime time was two years ago and it actually was my real birthday!! Now all of it is a little off so the draft is tomorrow.  As I looked through the vendors I could consider for today, in honor of the draft, I chose Wedding Bows by Natalie Kelley.  She is from the Buffalo area (home of my beloved Bills!) and her last name is Kelley (like my favorite player of all time – but not spelled the same!).

Natalie used to be a teacher.  As her students were growing up and getting married, she started to make bows for them and their weddings.  When she retired, she was looking for something to do with her time.  All of her past clients and family and friends encouraged her to start making wedding bows on a regular basis – yet the creation of Wedding Bows by Natalie Kelley!

Natalie designs and creates custom made bows for weddings and special occasions. Bows can be placed on church pews, chairs, cars, limos etc. . When finished with ceremony bows, they can be moved and used on chairs or doors for the reception, helping to cut costs by having the bows serve “double duty”.  Natalie loves ribbon so you can “talk bows” with her and she can create bows that fit any wedding style. She delivers and places bows in any location of your choice. Also, she will coordinate colors and themes. Her bows are elegant, affordable and perfectly suited for special occasions.

If you would like to contact Natalie about bows for your special occasion, you can check out and “like” her facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Wedding-BOWS-by-Natalie-Kelley/264309193580837.  And of course, as usual, please tell her that Dreamweaver Calligraphy sent you!

Dreamweaver Calligraphy is getting “locked up” for MDA! Help me support a great cause!

Reggie Bush for MDA

Dear Friends,

I have big news! This spring I’m volunteering with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. On May 9th, I’m going to be a “jailbird” at the MDA Lock-Up at the Dallas Theater and Civic Center. I’ll be spending time “behind bars” and need your help raising my “bail” so I can get out!

What do your dollars support?: The MDA is the nonprofit agency dedicated to serving people with muscle-wasting diseases, including ALS (or Lou Gehrig’s disease), Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and more than 40 other muscle diseases.

How are the dollars used?: All of the funds will be dedicated to local families – paying for specialized healthcare clinic visits, local research efforts, support groups, and to send local kids to a special ADA summer camp!

Why does it matter?: MDA is different. It was founded in the 1950s by a group of concerned parents wanting to fight back against a little known disease that has a devastating impact on the people who have it. More than 50 years later, MDA is making significant progress to understanding the causes of muscular dystrophy, and finding cures and treatments.

Please donate today on my fundraising website – at an amount that makes you comfortable. Together we can make a difference for a Paulding County family fighting against muscle diseases.

Thanks,

Maren,

#ww Wedding Wednesday featuring @twithollyevents Hollyevents!

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

This week’s #ww Wedding Wednesday features a wedding planner who is based out of Pennsylvania but has planned and coordinated events everywhere from St. Simon’s Island to Martha’s Vineyard to Hawaii  – the planner’s name is Holly Trout and her business is called Hollyevents.

Holly have been in love with weddings since she was 5 years old!  When she was a little girl, she lived near a church. She would get so excited when she would see cars lined up with paper flowers all over them. She would hide under a tree and wait and wait…she would wait for as long as it would take to get a glimpse of the BRIDE…her dress, her veil, the flowers, the bridesmaids, her color scheme…and on and on. She would then run to the edge of the road and wave as they drove by beeping their horns. She would hope one of the pretty paper flowers would blow off one of the cars as it so often would just so she could have a small part of that magical day and she knew then that she wanted to be a part of it.

The first event she ever planned as a baby shower in the fall of 1991.   Being involved with that only confirmed her lifelong goal, that planning events is what she should do, needed to do!  In 2011 she decided to start her own business and NEVER looked back. She loves what she does! She built a fabulous team of four lovely and talented young ladies. They offer full service planning, coordination, consulting, and day of directing for weddings and other social and business events.

One special services they offer for Brides is a “lady in waiting”. One of the things this service includes is a stylist that will be with the bride throughout the photo sessions to make sure everything is in place and picture perfect.  That, among other things, makes Hollyevents special and unique.  If you are looking for a planner, I suggest you check them out on their facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/hollyevents or follow them on twitter at @twithollyevents.  Their website is under construction but check back soon to http://www.hollyevents.com/ to see even more of what they have to offer!  And, as usual, if you do go check them out, be sure to tell them that Dreamweaver Calligraphy sent you!

Forget Friday the 13th – Its National Peach Cobbler Day!!!

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

Peach Flag Placecards from Southern Weddings

A lot of people get weirded out about Friday the 13th but not me.  I have already done blogs about wedding superstitions and lucky signs, etc., but on this day that is ‘supposed’ to be unlucky, lets focus on what else this day is — April 13th is National Peach Cobbler Day!

Cobblers have been printed in cookbooks since the early 19th century and most likely originated in Europe.  The earliest meaning of the word “cobbler” refers to one who makes (or “cobbles”) shoes. Sometime later, “to cobble” came to mean “to put together clumsily or roughly” (American Heritage Dictionary). This second meaning is most likely the origin of the name of fruit-based dessert known as “cobbler,” in which the ingredients are thrown together with little of the precision required to make a classic fruit pie. Cobblers are thus easy to make.  There is some debate as to whether a cobbler in an American creation (as the Southerners claim) or if they originally were made in Europe where they actually started out as meat cobblers and then gravitated towards fruit cobblers.

The use of peach as a wedding color is very popular and lends itself to lots of decorating styles.  Bridesmaids dresses, bouquets, and centerpieces can all be peach or contain peaches.  Not as common, however, the use of a peach cobbler in lieu of a traditional wedding cake.  There were many examples of couples doing a variety of southern desserts all together and including cobbler as one of them.  For those that opt to use cupcakes instead of wedding cakes, there were many recipes for a peach cobbler-flavored cupcakes.

For me, though, I am a purist.  Living in Georgia, the peach state, has given me a complete appreciation for the peach.  I personally like Georgia peaches better than South Carolina peaches and there is nothing better than a fresh peach.  Well, my husband thinks there is nothing better than a fresh peach that has been made into a cobbler – that is one of his all-time favorite desserts.  I have experimented with all kinds of recipes and here is the variation I like best.

  • 1/2 C butter or margarine melted
  • 2 16 oz cans of peaches drained, reserving 1/4 C juice
  • 1 C flour
  • 1 C milk
  • 2 t baking powder
  • 1/4 t salt
  • 1/2 C brown sugar
  • 1/2 t cinnamon

Pour butter into a shallow 2-qt. baking dish and set aside.  In a saucepan, bring the peaches and juice just to a boil. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, combine sugar, flour, milk, baking powder, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt; mix well. Pour peaches over butter in baking dish. Top with batter. Bake uncovered at 400 degrees F for 25 minutes or until cake tests done. Serve warm (preferably with French vanilla ice cream!

Enjoy National Peach Cobbler day – there is nothing unlucky about that!
